Melissa (Mel) Alexander, Esq.

Melissa Alexander is a compassionate and determined attorney who focuses her practice on guardianship advocacy and landlord-tenant representation. Her work is grounded in a commitment to protecting the rights, dignity, and stability of vulnerable individuals, tenants, and families.

 

Melissa earned her Bachelor of Arts in Literary Studies from The New School for Liberal Arts and her Master’s degree in Teaching English Education. She later pursued her law degree at the City University of New York (CUNY) School of Law, where she participated in the Family Defense Clinic, representing parents accused of abuse and neglect in family court proceedings.

 

After graduating from CUNY Law, Melissa dedicated her career to serving some of the most at-risk individuals through her work at multiple community guardian programs. In these roles, she provided comprehensive legal services to individuals adjudicated as incapacitated or in need of a guardian under New York's Article 81 framework. Melissa has extensive experience assisting guardians with court compliance, advocating for the housing rights of incapacitated persons, handling eviction defense, and protecting clients' access to safe and stable living conditions. Her guardianship work often involved strategic navigation of both guardianship and landlord-tenant matters, ensuring that vulnerable individuals remained housed, protected, and respected.In addition to her guardianship practice, Melissa has substantial experience advocating for tenants in landlord-tenant disputes. She worked at the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) in the Tenants' Rights Unit, representing tenants facing eviction, nonpayment proceedings, holdover actions, and succession rights disputes. Melissa has appeared in Housing Court to advocate for clients facing unsafe living conditions, wrongful eviction threats, and breaches of their rights as tenants under New York law.

 

Melissa’s legal background also assisting clients in business formation, real estate transactions, and trademark registration. Through this work, she helped entrepreneurs establish new businesses, complete real estate closings, and protect their intellectual property.

 

Today, Melissa focuses her practice on providing strategic, compassionate representation in guardianship matters and landlord-tenant disputes. Whether defending tenants' rights, assisting guardians with housing and legal compliance issues, or helping families protect vulnerable loved ones, Melissa approaches every case with empathy, attention to detail, and a deep commitment to achieving meaningful results for her clients.
